As part of strengthening UN reforms and delivery as one, UNEP has been engaging with the United Nations Country Teams (UNCT) in implementing solutions on Sustainable and Inclusive Growth and Development, and outcomes on Environmental Sustainability & Food Security.

This programme was to achieve three aspects coordinated by the Nasarawa State University at Keffi (NSUK) and the UNEP EBAFOSA initiative on “Supporting coherent policy implementation to catalyze food & livelihood security in Africa”.

OPERATIONALIZING NIGERIA'S MARKET INCENTIVES AND IMPROVING THE MARKETABILITY OF THE ENTIRE AGRO-VALUE CHAIN THROUGH STANDARDS APPLICATION

OPERATIONALISING THE CLIMATE ACTION MARKET INCENTIVES GUIDE FOR TOMATO VALUE CHAIN IN NIGERIA

All across the continent share in this vision of a globally competitive country and Africa, and Nigeria’s actions will drive this vision, as it is of much interest to them.

EMIRATE OF NASARAWA : CASSAVA AGRO-INDUSTRIALIZATION UPDATE

While Africa is faced with this seemingly insurmountable challenge of climate change that are already shrinking income revenue streams by a massive 75% in the continent. Nigeria is the 55th most vulnerable country to cli­mate change and 22nd least ready. Overarchingly, climate change is projected to cost 6 – 30% of Nigeria’s GDP by 2050, translating to $100 billion – $460 billion in losses.

Market incentives for climate action: EBAFOSA has worked with national standards bodies to develop a climate action market incentive guide on the cascade of standards agro-enterprises in the country need to comply with to ensure they tap into health, environment, climate & quality conscious consumers who are increasing.

Operational Level: at operational level, EBAFOSA is providing a common framework that is convening enterprises in agriculture, clean energy, micro-finance, Information Communication Technology – to foment market driven partnerships that enhance climate actions. Examples of operational impacts;

Policy Level: at policy level, EBAFOSA is supporting countries establish inter-ministerial policy task forces. Example of policy impacts;

Why EBAFOSA: achieving the UN Environment aim of scaling climate actions that enhance socioeconomic wellbeing needs stakeholders from diverse sectors – government, private sector, development partners, individual citizens – working towards the same end-goal. And to achieve this, a common and inclusive framework is needed to convene all these actors for partnerships. So EBAFOSA stands at the crossroad of multiple global change challenges - land degradation, desertification and recurrent drought and Climate Change that are the root causes of food insecurity in Africa.

Nigeria: in addition to the planning ministry which hosts EBAFOSA Nigeria, focal persons to constitute the Nigeria interagency policy task force have been established in the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment and Power and Energy. Additional focal persons from ministries of lands, Industry/trade among others are being mobilized to launch the task force. Among priority policies is development of an incentives package to encourage investors in off-grid electrification.
